Masroor Temple has been recognized as one of India’s most mysterious and alluring destinations. Masrror’s fascinating architectural design, its history, the legends of its constructions have been attracting tourists from all around the world. It is often referred to as India’s Luxor because of its alluring and fascinating sights. There is no record about when, how and by whom the Masroor temple complex was constructed. Legends say that these rock cut complexes were created by Pandavas during their stay at this mountainous region.

What History Says About its Construction?

One thing we can conclude: they were constructed by the master craftsmen sometime during 7th and 8th centuries AD with astonishing skills. Sophisticatedly designed structure and its mysterious surrounding make them one of the only temple complexes of its kind in the Indian Subcontinent. Dating back to the late 7th or early 8th century AD, the temple complex is located about 45 KMS from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. It shares a stark resemblance with Angkorwat of Combodia which was constructed in late 11th century.

It was constructed on the top of a 3000 feet high hill. All the other temples are built in continuity around the main shrine. The central complex contains the stone images of Shri Ram Chandra, Lakshman and Mata Sita. The stone images are decorated with different colours, clothes and flower buds.

Legends about its Construction:

Mahabharata states that the five Pandavas spent considerable amount of time in these mountains during their banvas (Exile). Locals tell us about the discovery of an incomplete stone staircase inside the temple complex. These staircases were constructed by Pandavas to reach heaven. However, the King of the gods, Indra did not like the ambition of the Pandavas and requested them to halt the construction. The Pandavas thus abandoned the project but created a temple complex around the staircase.

Architectural Design:

The entire complex is composed of 15 rising towers or Shikhars and a rectangular pond of water.  The rectangular pond of water in front of the temple complex has a legendary link to Draupadi. Some stories also state that this pond was constructed solely for the purpose of her ablutions. The original temple was partially destroyed because of the massive earthquake that shook the region in 1905. Contrary to other temples in India, Masroor temple is a quiet, spiritual and serene place where mystics and tourists from all around India come in search of peace.

Masroor is a very serene tourist spot. You can visit this temple by paying a minimum entrance fee. The locals of the region are allowed to visit and pay respects on two occassionsL Ram Navmi and Krishna Janmashtmi.
